Thank you to South Lake Union employers for investing in rail

Today we gathered in South Lake Union to thank four local employers who are investing $204,000 to increase service on the Seattle Streetcar. These employers – Group Health, Amazon.com, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and UW Medicine – know that more frequent service on this line is a good thing for their employees, and are stepping up to the plate to make a private investment in a public service.

Convenient public transit in South Lake Union was an important part of Amazon’s decision to move its employees into the neighborhood. Good transit service is part of the package that makes our city attractive to businesses. That’s one of the reasons that we’re proposing to invest over $5 million in rail expansion in our 2013-2014 Proposed Budget. Investing in rail brings jobs and prosperity to our community.

Thank you to Group Health, Amazon.com, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and UW Medicine for helping us to build a better Seattle.

Mayor, there appears to be no planning around the perpetual onslaught of seemingly disconnected construction efforts underway in SLU. The jackhammers have been digging out and re-fill the same patch of pavement outside REI for months now.

It’s become a very unpleasant neighborhood to work/live in. Please tell me there is some light at the end of this long, loud, vibrating, tar stinky, exhaust-ridden, dusty, maze of street closures?

Dear Mayor McGinn and other supporters of rail.

Please don’t put rail on Eastlake Ave. I don’t want rail on my commute route and neither do any of the bicyclist I’ve talked to.

Dear Mayor McGinn and other supporters of rail, I think it would be a great idea to put rail on Eastlake Ave E to the U-District.

We need to think of better ways to move greater numbers of people. Let’s be efficient. Let’s not let one group of people (cyclists) or one member of one group of people try and dictate transportation for entire our city.

Eastlake is very crowded with cars, buses, and bicycles. Any improvements will be outstanding for people who travel to South Lake Union.
