Seattle Symphony performs to hundreds at City Hall

Last week the mayor welcomed the Seattle Symphony and new Music Director Ludovic Morlot to the lobby of City Hall, where nearly 350 people gathered for a free lunchtime concert featuring Weber’s Overture to Der Freischütz and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.

The Seattle Symphony, with the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, has established a tradition of performing free concerts at City Hall to standing-room-only crowds every year since 2006. It’s all part of the Symphony’s work to bring classical music to a broader community.

“At the Seattle Symphony we take very seriously our role in providing music for the widest possible cross-section of people across our region,” said Executive Director Simon Woods. “Music is for everybody, and we love the opportunity to take our great orchestra out of Benaroya Hall, and into schools, community centers and public spaces to share the joy of music. This is just one strand of our ever-increasing commitment to communities, families and young people.”

The Symphony recently earned a spot on Carnegie Hall’s Spring for Music festival lineup in 2014. The annual festival spotlights excellent North American orchestras. The Symphony is one of six selected from a field of 60.

The Symphony’s next free community concert is 7 p.m., Friday, April 27 at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center. Assistant Conductor Eric Garcia will conduct.

The free concerts are presented as part of the Seattle Symphony’s Family, School & Community Programs, which are partially supported with funding from the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, 4Culture and the National Endowment for the Arts.
