Mayor kicks off summer meal program for kids

On Friday Mayor Mike McGinn joined U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott, City Councilmember Nick Licata and community members at the Jefferson Community Center to kick off the Seattle Human Services Department’s Summer Food Service Program.

“We want young people in Seattle to have a fun, safe and healthy summer,” said Mayor McGinn, “And it all starts with good nutrition. We want more people to know about this great free program for kids and teens.”

Thousands of Seattle children ages 1 through 18 will enjoy free breakfasts and lunches this summer through the Summer Food Service Program. The U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded program, formerly known as “Summer Sack Lunch,” is open from June 24 through August 23, 2013 at approximately 100 sites across the city. These include designated community centers, Seattle park playgrounds, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs and YWCAs, and other community sites throughout Seattle and parts of King County.

Meals open to public: The majority of sites (about 70) will offer meals to the public and all children 18 years old and younger can come to have a meal.

Meals for children enrolled in programs: Some of the meal sites (about 30) offer the food program to children enrolled in specific activity programs. Meals are served to all children enrolled in the program for free. However, 50 percent or more of the children enrolled must be from families that are at or below the levels in the following table:
