Conversación with our Seattle Latino Leaders
Latinos are on the move. In fact, the 2010 Census shows us that Latinos are the fastest growing minority in Washington State.
Last Thursday, Mayor Michael McGinn met with over 20 Latino leaders at Sea Mar Community Health Center in Seattle’s South Park community
South Park is a fitting location for this conversation as it houses Seattle’s largest Latino population and has been an area of focus for the City since 2005 when city staff met with community and business representatives to form the South Park Action Agenda, a city-staffed, community-driven document focused on environmental improvements, business and transportation, youth development, public safety and community engagement.
Throughout the 1 ½ hour meeting the group spoke about major topics impact the daily life of our Latino communities:
- Youth internships
- Business assistance for small and micro-businesses
- Police accountability
- Transit access and transit-oriented development
- Latinos in government
- Affordable housing
The Mayor has asked city staff to continue to monitor these issues and provide regular updates to the Latino roundtable in the coming months. The next Latino roundtable will take place in the next few months. Click here to sign up for the mayor’s newsletter and learn more about the upcoming event.
