An update on summer public safety in the East Precinct
In a continuing series of briefings at each of our police precincts, Mayor McGinn visited the East Precinct yesterday to talk with Captain Ron Wilson about what we’re doing to protect public safety this summer.
With a particular focus on preventing gun violence, the East Precinct has recently been using data-driven practices to hone in on areas that need the most attention. After identifying “hot spots”, officers make regular visits to these areas to walk around, talk with homeowners, and visit businesses. Officers have also been working directly with area schools and teen centers to create a familiar presence with our youth.
Recently the East Precinct’s efforts have been felt in two hot spot areas, where emergency calls have gone down 60% and 30%, respectively.
East Precinct is also:
- Deploying traffic enforcement officers to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety and increase officer visibility in the neighborhood
- Focusing on nuisance properties that support or contribute to criminal activity
- Looking actively for opportunities to implement Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles
- Using a Neighborhood Corrections Initiative team to identify and contact persons on Department of Corrections supervision
Stay tuned for the final entry in our series when we visit the Southwest Precinct next week.
